Beyond World Refugee Day: AREF’s Expanding Humanitarian Mission Across Nigeria

On a humid June morning in Lagos, bags of rice, cooking oil, gari, tomatoes, seasoning cubes, and salt were stacked in neat rows awaiting distribution. Volunteers moved briskly through the venue, organizing supplies destined for families whose lives have been disrupted by conflict, displacement, and economic hardship. It was World Refugee Day 2026, but the gathering felt less like a ceremonial observance and more like a declaration of purpose.

The occasion marked the launch of the African Refugees Foundation’s (AREF) Food Outreach Program, a humanitarian initiative designed to provide immediate relief to displaced persons, victims of banditry, and vulnerable low-income families across Nigeria.

Hosted by AREF Executive Director Mr. Olujimi Olusola and supported by the Lagos State Government, the outreach was officially flagged off in Lagos with plans to expand in the coming months to Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Rivers, Kwara, and Kaduna states. For many of the beneficiaries, the food packages represent more than nutrition. They represent stability in lives often defined by uncertainty.

Each package contains enough essential food items to prepare meals for a family of five or sustain an individual for several days. For those without access to cooking facilities—the elderly, displaced persons living in temporary shelters, and others facing severe hardship—AREF has arranged the preparation and distribution of freshly cooked meals beginning immediately after the launch.

Nigeria’s humanitarian challenges have grown increasingly complex in recent years. Violence linked to banditry, communal conflicts, and economic pressures has displaced thousands of citizens, creating pockets of need in both urban and rural communities. While governments continue to address the structural causes of displacement, organizations like AREF are helping to fill immediate gaps.

The launch drew an influential gathering of public officials, community leaders, and humanitarian advocates. Among those present were former Lagos State Governor and former Minister of Works, Babatunde Raji Fashola; Otunba Lai Oriowo, Director of the Odua Group of Companies; Alex Oturu, South-West Coordinator of the National Commission for Refugees; Chief Opral Benson, represented by Mrs. Aina; Chief Duro Omogbenigun; and AREF Trustees Segun Suliaman and Bisi Kuforiji.

The organization’s roots run deep. AREF was founded by the late Chief Olusegun Olusola, former Nigerian Ambassador to Ethiopia, diplomat, broadcaster, humanitarian, and one of Nigeria’s most respected advocates for refugees and displaced populations. His vision was simple but ambitious: to ensure that vulnerable people are not forgotten.

That vision remains visible today in every bag of food distributed and every meal prepared. With a meal, and a message, AREF continues the mission of bringing hope to Nigeria’s Displaced
