Celebrate the Constitution and Martin Luther King!

2026 marks America’s 250th anniversary of the signing of the U.S. Constitution, and celebrations will take place nationwide all year long, beginning January 2026. Similarly, Dr. Mart


in Luther King Jr. will be celebrated on Monday, January 19. This federal holiday honors his birthday (January 15) and his pivotal role in the Civil Rights Movement.

On July 4, 2026, the United States will mark the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence with national events, exhibitions, and community programs. These celebrations, coordinated by organizations such as the Department of the Interior and the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library, aim to involve all Americans and honor the nation’s history and future

In Ohio, Dayton Metro Library (DML) invites you to join special programs for all ages that commemorate Martin Luther King Jr achievements and programs highlighting Ohio’s role in shaping our nation’s history especially the signing the Constitution. Check them out! These programs will feature the exploration maps of the Civil Rights Movement or brush up on your knowledge of King’s famous “I Have a Dream” speech with DML’s free African American History Online database. It is one of over 100 databases accessible with members Library Card!
Meanwhile, a year into the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten reading initiative! DML has challenged parents and caregivers to read 1,000 books with their kids before kindergarten and to keep track by registering at Beanstack. Books read at bedtime, at the library or school, or listening to audiobooks or DML’s Dial-a-Story all count. Small prizes are awarded at key milestones and can be picked up at your local Branch. You can track your child’s progress with a paper tracker (available at all Branches), via the Beanstack app, or online. As of December 11, 2025, 1,725 children have registered, with over 1,000 kids tracking books they have read! More than 285 prizes have been awarded, and 44 kids have even completed the challenge! This is an ongoing initiative, so sign up today!
