SUMMER FUN IN LIBRARY CONTINUES

The 2015 Summer Reading Club,  a well-known program offered by the Dayton Metro Library, with thousands of children has expanded into the SUMMER CHALLENGE, which not only encourages reading, but also invites active participation in new, innovative programs to keep kids learning all summer long.

Sponsored by Time Warner Cable’s Connect a Million Minds, The Friends of the Library, Vectren and The Dayton Metro Library Foundation, with partnership support from many organizations including ReadySetSoar and Get Up Montgomery County. The Summer Challenge is focused on preventing “Summer Slide,” the term used to explain the loss of academic skills and knowledge over the course of summer break.

“It’s so important to keep young minds active and engaged,” said Tish Wilson, Assistant Director for Youth Services at the Library. “Research has shown that kids who don’t keep reading and learning during the summer can start back to school at least two months behind their peers in the fall. Our programs are designed to encourage active participation and learning in subjects such as aerospace, science, engineering and robotics, and they’re a lot of fun, too

The 2015 Summer Challenge will feature grand prizes for participants.  “We have some fantastic new prizes this year,” said Ms. Wilson. “Grand Prize drawings will be held at each Library for those who read a certain number of hours and attend five programs. Each Library will award a Little Tikes Cozy Coupe for toddlers, a brand new bicycle for kids, a Kindle Fire HD7 for teens and a cooler and stadium blanket for adults. Systemwide, one adult winner will receive a Kindle Fire HD7 too. Plus there are lots of fun rewards all ages can earn along the way.

According to a press release by Chuck Duritsch, of the External Relations Dept., of Dayton Metro Library, the Summer Challenge participants earn incentives by keeping track of both the time they spend reading and the Library programs they attend. All Library programs are free.

Checks by African Metro News show there are Summer Challenges for four age groups, so everyone in the family can participate:Summer read3
